Small Press Idol: A New Phenomena?                                      By Ian Shires

Well, we had a feeling the contest would be popular amongst the membership of the SPA, but once the word started getting around, the new registrations at the forum started, and has turned into a flood! We're very grateful and happy to have all the new writers and artists joining in, and are looking forward to seeing more new entries. We've already gotten our FIRST ENTRY, and you can click that to go see it, and follow links to the judges comments so far also. It will give you a good idea of how Round 1 will take shape.
For all the new stores we've gathered information on, here's a quick overview of what the Small Press Idol competition is all about, and a link to further info. We're taking submissions from individuals and teams for comic book concepts, the winner will be given a free ride on our upcoming Mysterious Visions Anthology, which will be the flagship of our new SPA Imprint, and depending on sales, an option for a series. Click on the MVA link there for more information on how that Anthology will work. We think it's a pretty solid, unique approach to the "pay to play" Anthology concept.
For all the guidelines to the contest, you can simply CLICK HERE. Remember, the first round deadline is March 15th. Your entry needs to be in our hands by that date!
Speaking of things that should be in hands, Work on The Guide to Self Published Periodicals is progressing, not as fast as I'd hoped, but we should have all the bugs worked out and the issue out very soon. Our goal is going to be to get that magazine Monthly, so look for the Deadline box for the NEXT issue, we've adjusted the deadline again, but this should be the last time, start planning to get your news, books, and advertisements in for that issue!

The Retailer's Box

The Stores Listings section of the website is far from complete, and I'm making this an official invitation to all store owners and managers out there getting this newsletter for the first time, or who have gotten a couple issues now, go in, look for your store in our listing, and use the form to update or add information. Building a solid, strong database of stores is important to the building of our Alternative Distribution System. Having the store owners from across the country listening in and providing feedback on the system will be important for us all.
If you'll take a look to the left, you'll see that our name-change is almost complete and The Guide #47 is almost ready for release. As a retail store, you are welcome to request our Retailers Package, which will include a copy of The Guide, a distribution sheet of all the publications we have available for 50% of their cover price, and information on getting copies of The Guide for your customers, to help stimulate sales of independent press publications. All you have to do to get the package is CLICK HERE, and send your stores name and address. We hope to hear from you! No $$ up front!

Kathy's Corner: Tips on getting listed

Let's keep this link for each week, it's important: Submissions Page.
Hello again folks, and I'm getting ready to start organizing the stack of publications that will become the review section of The Guide #48. Let's talk about covers. They are the first thing that anyone will look at in any publication you ever do. So as I spread these out, I'm noticing a trend here: Lack of recognizable logos. Hard to read titles of publications, and lack of company identification. When you go to assemble your next publication, remember this: Whether you are looking at having a local store put a few copies out on consignment, us looking at it for distribution, or taking it to a convention: You need more than ART on your cover to catch people's attention. You need to look like you have intention of keeping the series going, or at least of publishing other things. Take some time to work on your identity, and people will be more likely to take a chance on you.
