The Dimestore Monday Kickstart Newsletter

Issue #6             February 2nd, 2004

Idols, Idols, Everywhere                                                   By Ian Shires

First call! Dimestore is opening the door for submissions to the FIRST Small Press Idol competition. The Winner will be printed in the first full size comic book sized issue of the re-vamped Mysterious Visions Anthology, with an option for a continuing series based on sales and reaction, as well as a free advertising deal for The Guide. Top Runners Up will receive lesser deals, and ALL people who submit in the first round will be printed in a special "Small Press Idol: The Submissions" book, with the comments from the judges.
We're hoping this competition, which will run for 4 rounds, and end in APRIL, will generate some real interest for the creators involved, and we will be vigorously promoting the competition. There will be updates about the competition in articles in The Guide to Self Published Periodicals, and it should be a lot of fun. For all the guidelines, you can simply CLICK HERE. Hope to have you all participate in the voting at least, all voting will be done in Polls on our forum.
Meanwhile, as we wait for the first submissions to roll in, I'm bust with reviews for the upcoming issue of The Guide, which should be released pretty soon here now. Please note that I pushed the deadline back for the NEXT issue, which I will be going straight into production on on the heels of this issue. Plenty of material already in to make it another solid issue. 2004 might have started off in a weather deep freeze for most of the country, but we're getting ready to do everything we can to warm up the small press world.

Kathy's Corner: Tips on getting listed

I wanted to remind everyone out there again about the REQUIREMENT that we instituted at the start of the new year, that all new publications that you send in that you want reviewed and listed in The Guide, need to have the Submissions Form filled out and included, if you want to have it listed. This coming issue (#48, not the #47 that Ian is in-process of completing right now) is the LAST one that had copies of things turned in before that requirement was instituted. Let me point out once again the Submissions Page. Please follow it's guidelines and tips!
That said, I think it's still fair to say that more publishers need to look and make sure they include page numbers inside their publications. It's not just something that helps us in getting information down about your publication, but your readers use such things when they comment on your publications amongs themselves. "Did you see what was on page 23?" "aw, why bother, I hate counting pages" Don't let that be your readers!
