The Dimestore Monday Kickstart Newsletter

Issue #5                                                                                                                     January 26th, 2004

The Rumblings in the Hills                                          By Ian Shires
It's not every day that I send out an e-mail to 1,700 people, in fact, this is the first time. So if this is the first time you've gotten one of our Kick Start e-mails, we hope you like it and will decide to stay on the list. The only people getting this that may not have SOME idea of what Dimestore is are the comic store owners and managers...and even they should remember the Obscurity Unlimited Ad Book that we mailed out to them in October/November. There's a very important announcement in a separate box of this newsletter just for retailers, we hope you'll check that out.
Another addition to the newsletter this week you'll note is the Printing Update, which we hope can help spotlight some of the publishers who have been helping up build our system by using it.
Beyond that, we think many of you will notice that we finally figured out how to send this newsletter with the images as links instead of embedded into the file, so we've been able to cut the hefty 200+ mb e-mails we've been sending since we started this new format down to around 15mb. We hope that alone will help this newsletter start reaching even more people. Want to help us continue to grow? Forward this e-mail to anyone you know who likes to read comics. Our major effort to bring forth a new distribution system for Small Press and independent publications is under way. I'm not going to presume to be able to explain everything about it in the time you're likely to spend reading this newsletter. We just hope you'll catch the vibe, and hear the rumblings in the hills. I can guarantee one thing: spend a few minutes looking around the things linked to this newsletter, you'll find SOMETHING useful and entertaining.

The Retailer's Box

We'd like to welcome any and all retailers who are reading this, and would like to direct you to a new feature of the Dimestore website: The Stores Listings. In the pages that you'll find there, you are likely to find your store listed. We'd like you to check the information we have about your store, and then use the form we've set up (linked to from all pages) to submit any changes or additions (including a short description for your store). This information is available for Small Press Enthusiasts to find your store, as well as for local publishers to know where to go for local promotion and support.
Our goal and mission is to get more copies of small press and independent publications moving into the hands of readers. Watch this box in the coming weeks for more on our ideas and plans to do just that, and how you can benefit.

The Publisher's Box

As a new feature to help publishers know where we're at with the Printing Service at all times, we'll be posting some basic information about new things we're working on, and what's currently getting printed by us. We'd like everyone to know that the Digest page is now back up, with new numbers, and Magazine numbers should be up shortly. We are hoping by Mid- Feb to have our below-1,000 copy full size comic page active as well. Watch this space for updates!

Kathy's Corner: Tips on getting listed

I've noticed in many publications that we get in for The Guide, vast differences in the set up and contents of the printing information. I do not know what the specific rules are regarding printing and copyright information (you can look in the forum How To section I'm sure), but I do know that many people must be completely ignoring the idea of presenting their publication so that others know who published it, who worked in the issue, and how to get more copies.
I suggest that before you publish another book, or your first, you pick up a couple publications on the newsstands out there, look and see what information is in the printing information, and then apply it to your own publication. It will go a long way towards how reviewers and fans see how you take that part of being a publisher seriously...and it will help us get more stores to look at your publication as something to stock on their shelves.

This one just for you Jay....went back to 2004 and got this one to show where the real roots of the SPA are....

This is awesome!! That is exactly what it should be. I hope that we can stick with this feel and yet take it one step further! Informative, relative and collective!

There are actually more developed, and better looking templates, later on. Some of the most recent ones, however, I stripped out a lot of things. When I go to do the first one for our official launch, I think I'll likely toss up a version of it before sending it out, and ask you guys what else it needs, etc.

OH!!!! And I will be happy to turn over witing for different parts of it to whoever we can, guest lead editorials, and reports on say that printing service we're looking at, etc...I want to focus on doing more reviews and co-ordination, than be the big ugly cheerleader I have fallen into being in the past. I'd like to see the Kick Start represent a weekly view of what is going on with the whole group.

I agree that the newsletter should focus on the group as a whole. Maybe we can have a submission area for items to be included in the newsletter then we can use what we wish from that pool each month. What do you think?

Chances are, once rolling, filling up the newsletter each week wont be the problem. Keeping it from being too unruly will be...
